A cybercriminal, usually by means of a virus, takes control of the infected computer and hijacks the user’s information by encrypting it in such a way that it remains inaccessible without the decryption password. In this way, the user is extorted by asking for a ransom in exchange for this password so that they can supposedly recover their data.
