Principal amortization

Principal amortization is the process by which a debt is amortized or repaid.

In each installment or payment of the debt consists of a portion of the principal amount as well as the interest generated by the debt.

For instance, in a mortgage payment, part of the money is used to pay the interest and the rest repays the debt or amortizes the principal.

Early repayment of a debt can be referred to as early settlement.
