“You get what you pay for”
The main idea to take into account is that being cheap can turn out to be expensive. The best option is to take out comprehensive ski insurance that also adapts to your skiing style, the destination and the length of your trip. This way, you won’t have any unpleasant surprises and you can be sure of medical assistance or rescue wherever you are, cover for transfers, repatriation or an extension of your stay, as well as for all medical treatment resulting from a potential injury.
Be careful, because the insurance offered by some resorts, or even that associated with your ski pass, does not always cover everything. If you have an accident on the slopes, the resort is obliged to help you and facilitate your transfer to a center. But sometimes you may have to pay for all the costs, including surgery and rehabilitation. And what would happen if you had an accident off-piste? In most cases, you would have to pay for medical care and rescue costs; on average, in the Spanish mountains, this is somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 euros. By the way, don’t think that this circumstance only affects the most daring skiers: if you slip at the door of a restaurant in the ski resort, you are also off-piste. That’s why it’s essential to be well informed while preparing your trip.
You could also consider becoming a member of a federation to take advantage of the insurance that this offers you, or take out health insurance.
Get your money back
Ski insurance will also allow you to get your money back in the event of a mishap that prevents you from enjoying your ski pass or lessons, which are usually not cheap. Neither is the sports equipment. That’s why many insurance policies cover the loss or destruction of luggage: if it is lost, stolen or damaged, in whole or in part, during your trip, your insurance company will compensate you.
And remember, whether you are a beginner or a proficient skier, you can still cause someone else to have an accident. It is essential that you have civil liability cover so that you can deal with any damages to third parties.
Alert Cops
To avoid any shocks during your skiing vacation, the Guardia Civil recommends that you follow the rules and do not skimp on safety. One of their tips is to use Alert Cops, an app that allows you to communicate quickly, accurately and free of charge with rescue services. You can also use it to alert them if you witness an accident or an emergency. Download it and enjoy the snow!
